EU Internet launches .eu domain names in Ireland

EU Internet, an Irish company which was appointed to manage .eu domain name registrations, officially launched the new European domain name today, 11th November 2005. The .eu domain name is unique in providing a European internet identity for citizens of the European Union. Its aim is to strengthen the European brand and provide commercial benefits for businesses, private users and the European Union institutions. As an accredited registrar EU Internet will assist applicants with the registration procedure and is responsible for processing thousands of applications that have already been submitted by individuals and organisations interested in registering their .eu domain names.
Speaking at the launch in Dublin, Charlie McCreevy, EU Commissioner with responsibility for the Internal Market and Services, said he considered the introduction of the .eu domain name to be an important development which will greatly enhance trade links across Europe. "Once adopted here in Ireland the .eu domain name will offer Irish businesses the opportunity to market themselves to a diverse and lucrative European market."
Irish businesses looking to secure their .eu domain name will be required to submit their application through an accredited registrar. The first phase of .eu domain name registrations will begin on December 7th during which only those with recognised rights to a name (such as trademark holders) and Public bodies may register their .eu domain name. Immediately after this the "landrush" period will begin, where .eu domain names will be available on a "first come, first served basis." Anyone resident in the European Community may register a .eu domain name during this "landrush" period.
Phelim O'Connell, Managing Director of EU Internet, said that "the launch of .eu domain names will stimulate growth in the domain name registration market in Ireland." He added that "the cost of registering a .eu domain name is very competitive at just €25, but early registration is necessary to maximise the chance of securing your .eu domain name."
